In terms of city awakenings, colleges are often best positioned to become the spark that helps fuel the community. This is because that it is easier for students to express faith on their campus than in high schools due to the openness of dialog that colleges exist for, as well as the maturity of the students vs high school. As discussed in on this website, Freshmen orientation, and the first weeks of Fall is the most leveraged time to create and disciple new believers.
All campus ministries know that the early Fall new student outreach is the time period that makes or breaks the year-to-year success of campus ministries. Unlike a church, campus ministries lose their entire group in four years if not replenished. The goal is to trigger movements, tipping points, and awakenings among new believers during the freshmen Fall semester. I heard about such a tipping point at an InterVarsity chapter on the Geneseo campus one year, where a student was completely transformed by Christ during Freshmen orientation. This triggered such a vision and hope in the chapter, that they worked with this student and the students on the floor of that dorm that 26 other students came to faith that semester. You can be sure that they came home with stories that Chirstmas that sparked a vision in their youth groups,
How can we as a community help there to be an awakening this winter and next Fall on the area campuses such as Syracuse University, Lemoyne College, OCC, and possibly Cazenovia, Cortland, and Oswego?
The good news is that God has already put much in motion, and like those who built Nehemiah’s wall in 52 days, we can see much of this in place before students start exams at the end of April.
